Our Approach

For the Noke Koi people, culture is not a concept. Culture is a living, breathing way of being held in community, land, language, and ceremony. Their traditions carry teachings and forms of healing that ripple far beyond the rainforest, offering wisdom to the wider world. But even the most resilient traditions cannot thrive when basic needs remain unmet. Clean water, stable food systems, and safe shelter are not just material needs; they are the ground upon which cultural memory and spiritual life are sustained.

Through more than a decade of partnership with the Noke koi Nation, one truth has become clear: protecting a culture begins by strengthening the foundation that allows it to endure. This is why the Kana Samurai Foundation focuses on three essential pillars that international development frameworks consistently identify as prerequisites for long-term community wellbeing: Health and Water Security, Food Systems and Nutrition, and Shelter and Cultural Infrastructure.

We treat vocational training as essential infrastructure, not a side program. Every investment we make is paired with skill-building so communities can maintain what is built, apply knowledge in daily life, and sustain cultural practices through lived, self-sufficient systems.

Help Preserve an Ancient Way of Life

The Noke Koi face growing threats to their survival. Your contribution gives them the tools to preserve their heritage and thrive.

Our Three Pillars

Across the Amazon and in Indigenous communities worldwide, experience and research has shown that no culture can thrive without the essentials of health, food security, and safe shelter.

Health & Water Security

Cultural survival depends on physical survival. Many villages lack clean drinking water and access to medical care, resulting in preventable illness, malnutrition, and high vulnerability. Our work includes:
  • Clean-water systems
  • Emergency care assistance
  • Support for elders and vulnerable families
The World Health Organization identifies water access as the single most cost-effective intervention for improving community health, reducing disease burden, and enabling children to thrive.

Food Systems & Nutrition

A nourished community is a thriving community. Food scarcity threatens health, weakens elders, and makes traditional life unsustainable. We are working to strengthen local food systems through:
  • Fish stocking for community ponds
  • Chickens and small-scale husbandry
  • Nutritional supplementation
  • Long-term regenerative food projects
UNICEF identifies food security as a key predictor of community stability, educational outcomes, and the preservation of cultural traditions.

Shelter & Infrastructure

Shelter is both protection and belonging. In the Nukukui villages, the homes of spiritual leaders are also cultural centers — gathering places for ceremony, teaching, craftwork, and collective life. Strengthening this infrastructure ensures both safety and cultural continuity.

Our work includes:
  • Building and repairing homes
  • Constructing community gathering houses
  • stablishing cultural centers for ceremony, craft, and women’s work
UNDP and UNESCO emphasize that cultural continuity relies on safe spaces for ritual, community life, and intergenerational transmission of knowledge.

How These Pillars Work Together

These three pillars create a self-reinforcing foundation. Clean water reduces disease, allowing families to participate fully in community and cultural life. Stable food systems reduce hunger and vulnerability, increasing resilience and autonomy. Safe housing and cultural centers strengthen social cohesion, ensuring traditions can be practiced, taught, and passed on.

Training connects these pillars by ensuring water systems, food production, and cultural spaces are locally maintained and economically active. As skills turn infrastructure into income, communities strengthen sovereignty while creating the conditions for culture and spiritual life to flourish for generations.

This is the heart of our mission.
